I renew my SSS salary loan

November 28, 2008

My last Social Security System (SSS) Salary Loan was fully paid two years ago. I wasn’t able to renew it then because I don’t have an SSS ID card yet. A year after, when I was about to secure one, the ID capture machine in Buendia branch was down until to date.Unfortunately, the ID capture machine of SSS branch near our home has been down too.

Last Wednesday, SSS – Buendia Makati personnel came to the office for an audit. I took this opportunity and asked when their ID capture machine would become operational. I lamented that I couldn’t renew my salary loan sans an SSS ID card. She informed me that, while most of their machines are not serviceable yet, I could support my loan application with submit two (2) valid ID cards in lieu of the SSS ID card. That’s grea!

After our meeting, I filled out the salary loan application form and submit it, together with my two (2) valid ID cards, to our Makati personnel group.

Sold, finally

November 26, 2008

After two months since I published that our 2005 Toyota Innova J Gas was for sale, I finally sold it.  I already delivered the unit to its new owner yesterday afternoon.

Selling it wasn’t a piece of cake.  I published it on the internet, ads papers, posters, through text messages and emails, and in this blog. I was bombarded with tons of queries.  Most of them were middlemen who haggled with a very very low price – as low as P400,000 to P455,000 only.  My initial asking price was P530,000; then, I dropped the price every week down to P475,000.  They insisted that my price was still exorbitant and their offers were the correct market value.

Last week, I found a direct buyer with a better offer.  And, I sold it to her.  She was lucky, indeed, for getting a car in very good order condition at a bargain price.

Manila Auto Salon 2008

November 22, 2008

I went to the Manila Auto Salon 2008 last Thursday at the SMX Convention Center, SM Mall of Asia (MOA), Pasay City  and watched, appreciated, and drooled at the beautiful vehicles before my eyes.

I’m really amazed at the cars that are modified, styled and accessorized to the max.  Kudos to their owners for devoting and spending so much money and time to make their cars stand out of the others. I wish I have both.

I’m sharing some of the pictures I took.

Welcome back, Mama Vicky

November 21, 2008

Mama Vicky was my office mate.  She was supposed to retire last January but her services had been extended until September.  She left for the United States of America on the first week of October for her long awaited vacation.

I just learned that she’s already back in town from her 1 1/2 month vacation.

Seminar on HS Code classifications

November 19, 2008

I and an office mate attended the 2-day seminar/workshop about Classifying Export Products under the Harmonized System (HS) Code. It was held on November 17 to 18 at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) Building – just across and adjacent to Philphos Head Office.  And, it was sponsored by Phil Export Confederation, Inc. (PhilExport), where our company is a member. The speakers were from the Tariff Commission.

The seminar and workshop primarily aimed to make the exporters, customs brokers, and freight forwarders fully understand the tariff classification and properly and accurately categorize cargoes in accordance with ATHN codes. Secondarily, it would prepare them for the implementation of the Electronic Export Declaration of the BOC’s Computerization Project – the Electronic-to-Mobile (E2M) Customs.

With the series of exercises we’d gone through during the workshop, I learned that classifying or categorizing cargoes according to HS Codes is not a walk in the park as I thought. It’s a complicated task and needs profound analysis to come up with the correct classification. With more practice and exercises, I think one could be proficient in it in due time.

Honda Civic slashes Kia Carens lead

November 14, 2008

As of 7:00 o’clock this morning, Kia Carens still leads the “2008 Automotive of the Year” in the 2008 Auto Focus People’s Choice Awards.  But, Honda Civic is already around the corner as the current 2nd placer.   It has already overtaken the erstwhile 2nd placer Hyundai Starex.

From last week, Honda Civic garnered an additional votes of 2,921 as against Kia Carens of 837 votes only.  And, the lead was cut from 2,921 down to 1,412.

Current standing:

  • Kia Carens – 15,130 votes
  • Honda Civic – 13,718
  • Hyundai Starex – 13,592

There are 16 days more to go before the poll closes.  Please keep on voting daily for Kia Carens.  Go to http://autofocus.com.ph to vote.

‘Come with’ or ‘go with’

November 9, 2008

My daughter wasn’t sure yet if she could come with us to Grande Island in Subic Bay for the 3-day grand birthday celebration of a relative.  Her application for a leave of absence was not approved; and, she’s trying to trade rest days from her office mate.

When she came home this afternoon, I asked her if she could come with us tomorrow for the celebration.  She didn’t answer my question; instead, she corrected my English, “Pa, it should be ‘go with us’ and not ‘come with us’.  She explained why the former.  Then, a light discussion ensued.

My daughter is now working in a call center.  When she was hired a few months ago, she underwent a refresher/review course in English.  And, the correct usages of “come” and “go” were discussed and emphasized in the course. She’s now sticking to what the Call Center’s English instructor taught them.

I didn’t budge; and, I searched the internet to support my position and to convince her.

According to BBC World Service, the right term is “come with” and not “go with” as what my daughter learnt.  Please check it here.

Oh, by the way, my daughter can’t come with us.  Too bad, she’s dreaming of going to that island.

Kia Carens leads in poll

November 8, 2008

Kia Carens is currently leading with 14,293 votes as the “2008 Automotive of the Year” in the 2008 Auto Focus People’s Choice Awards. Trailing in second and third are Hyundai Grand Starex (12,231) and Honda Civic (11,372), respectively.

The poll started March 1 and ends on November 30, 2008. Anybody who has an e-mail address and access to the internet may register and cast its vote once daily until November 30, 2008. Voters can have a chance to win prizes monthly.

The current leaders in each category of “2008 Models of the Year” are:

  • Sedan Sub-Compact – Kia Picanto
  • Sedan Compact – Honda Civic
  • Sedan Midsize – Toyota Camry
  • Sedan Large – Volvo S80
  • Sports Car – Mitsubishi Evolution
  • AUV – Isuzu Crosswind
  • SUV Compact – Hyundai Tucson
  • SUV Midsize – Hyundai Santa Fe
  • SUV Large – Hyundai Vera Cruz
  • Mini Van – Kia Carens
  • Full Size – Hyundai Grand Starex
  • Pick Up – Nissan Navarra

With 22 days more to go before the poll ends, I believe Kia Carens would maintain its lead and win.
